About Giroux Bros. Martial Arts in Newtonville, MA

Meet Steve Giroux

Owner and Head Instructor at
Giroux Bros. Martial Arts in Newtonville

Steve Giroux – 7th Degree Black Belt

Steve Giroux achieved his 1st Degree Black Belt in the United Fighting Arts Federation (UFAF) and Chun Kuk Do (CKD) in 1988 and is currently a 7th Degree Black Belt in UFAF and CKD.

Steve represented the United States and the United Fighting Arts Federation as part of the first Karate Team to exchange goodwill in the former Soviet Union in March of 1989.

Steve graduated from Bentley College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy and a Minor Concentration in Law in 1999. Prior to attending college, Steve and his brother Jeff (with the guidance of their father Norm) owned and operated Champion Karate Center in Southington, CT for 4 years.

Realizing how much he missed teaching martial arts, Steve decided to travel a slightly different path than many of the accountants he graduated with and founded Giroux Bros. Martial Arts in Newtonville, MA in January, 1999. Since then he’s been extremely fortunate to have taught and worked with hundreds of families in the Newton community and has promoted many students to black belt in the art of Chun Kuk Do.

“I wanted to give students the same opportunity I had growing up and pass along the knowledge I have gained over my 31 years in the martial arts. It is my goal to provide excellent student service, character building, and the very best martial arts instruction to my students. I’ve seen many individuals (both children and adults) benefit from martial arts training in school, in work, and at home. There is no greater reward than to see how your teaching can affect someone’s life for the better”.
- Steve Giroux

Steve has been an active competitor in point sparring for most of his life and has won many point sparring titles in Men’s Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight divisions. In 1999, he was awarded the title of Grand Champion at the UFAF International Karate Championships held at the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

As a result of this, Steve appeared on NECN’s “Around the Globe” segment and NESN’s “Front Row” program. For three consecutive years, Steve competed on the national circuit through the North American Sport Karate Association (NASKA) and was rated #2 in the Light Heavyweight division in 2001.

Steve then took a break from competing on the national circuit to build up and focus on growing and professionalizing his studio.

In 2010, Steve re-entered the competition arena and after 11 years accomplished a comeback winning the title of Grand Champion once again at the UFAF International Karate Championships in Las Vegas. He then repeated the win once more in 2011 as the overall Men’s Grand Champion and 2 X Norris Cup recipient.

Also, in 2011 as a sponsored member of Team Chun Kuk Do Steve placed 2nd at the National Black Belt Leagues Super Grand World Games in Sacramento, California.

After 25 years competing as a black belt, Steve decided it was time to retire from competition and focus on helping his students achieve higher levels of success through earning black belts, competing, and becoming leaders in the studio and the community.

In addition to running his studio full time, Steve recently began writing for and is regular contributor to one of the Martial Arts Industry’s largest trade magazines, MA Success which is distributed to over 20,000 studios both nationally and internationally.

In July 2012, Steve was a speaker at the Martial Arts Supershow at the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada as well as the United Fighting Arts Federation International Training Conference at the Southpoint Hotel and Casino also in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In July 2012, Steve was awarded by Masters’ Chuck and Aaron Norris, the most prestigious award in The United Fighting Arts Federation, The Wieland Norris Award, an award created in honor of their brother who was killed heroically in Vietnam on June 3, 1970.

Above and beyond the accomplishments Steve has had in the martial arts, he is most proud of his family — his wife Jodee, and their 3 great kids.
